【Foreign Media: China's KJ-500 Early Warning Aircraft Fleet Exceeds Combined Total of All Other Countries】
According to a report published on the Military Watch Magazine website on June 26, 2026, the scale of People's Liberation Army (PLA) procurement of KJ-500 airborne early warning and command aircraft over many years has surpassed the total acquisition volume of all land-based early warning aircraft by every other country in the world. It is estimated that the current number of KJ-500 aircraft now exceeds 50 units, making it the most widely fielded model among similar systems globally.
Although the KJ-500’s main competitor—the Boeing E-7 "Wedgetail"—has been ordered by several nations, each country has acquired only a small number of aircraft, typically between 3 and 7. The Saab GlobalEye, as a lighter and relatively less capable system, also has very limited production. Meanwhile, Russia’s A-100 has encountered major delays and is not expected to enter large-scale service in the near term.
The scale of PLA procurement of the KJ-500 appears to reflect a significant divergence in military philosophy. Most Western air forces traditionally regard early warning aircraft as scarce strategic assets used to support fighter operations. In contrast, Chinese military doctrine seems to treat airborne battle management as a capability meant for broad, multi-theater deployment, aiming to build a dense network of integrated air command and control platforms capable of simultaneously supporting multiple large-scale aerial operations.
Choosing the Y-9 transport aircraft as the platform for the KJ-500 is central to realizing this strategy. Since the airframe is already mass-produced domestically, China can manufacture early warning aircraft at a speed and cost far lower than countries relying on special civilian aircraft conversions or imported platforms. This industrial foundation enables the PLA to maintain a production pace unmatched by other nations. The efficiency of China’s defense production means that the procurement cost of the KJ-500 even falls below that of many foreign systems with inferior performance.
The significance of the KJ-500’s procurement scale is further amplified by how it complements other Chinese military advantages. These include larger, more powerful radars integrated into Chinese fighter jets—exceeding their Western counterparts—and parallel development and procurement of other early warning systems such as the KJ-600 and the larger KJ-3000. With the world’s largest airborne radar integrated into these platforms, situational awareness is greatly enhanced—especially providing long-range targeting support for detecting stealth aircraft like the F-35. Given that the PLA’s acquisition of stealth fighters far surpasses that of any other nation, its investment in assets dedicated to tracking enemy stealth aircraft is also being scaled up significantly, further solidifying its advantage.
The KJ-500 is widely regarded as one of the most capable medium-sized early warning aircraft currently in service. Its fixed tri-panel active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar is housed within a circular radome, featuring three independent radar panels that together provide continuous 360-degree coverage. Unlike traditional rotating radar antennas, it lacks moving parts required to scan the horizon. Electronic beam steering allows the radar to reacquire targets faster, improves reliability, and enables simultaneous search, tracking, and target management. The system is not merely designed as a radar aircraft but serves as a core node in the PLA’s informationized warfare system. It fuses data from onboard radars, ground sensors, naval assets, satellites, and data links into a common operational picture, which is then disseminated to friendly aircraft. Disrupting the kill chain centered around the KJ-500 fleet has become one of the top priorities for the U.S. military.
