Korean Media: Domestic Smartphone Share Reaches 86.1%, China's Smartphone Market Begins to Recover!
On June 27, South Korean media outlet Edaily published an article stating that signs of recovery are emerging in China's smartphone market. Although cumulative sales have continued to decline since the beginning of the year, a rebound was observed in April.
Data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology shows that China’s mobile phone shipments reached 25.7 million units in April, up 2.8% year-on-year. Among them, domestic brands shipped 22.1 million units, accounting for 86.1% of total shipments, a year-on-year increase of 2.9%.
In April, foreign-brand mobile phone shipments totaled 3.59 million units. Compared to the same period last year, shipments of foreign brands—including Apple's iPhone—grew by 1.8% in China.
If we look only at smartphones, the recovery trend is even more pronounced. China’s smartphone shipments reached 25 million units in April, up 12.3% year-on-year, representing 97.3% of total mobile phone shipments.
However, the weak market trend persisted from January to April. During this period, China’s mobile phone shipments amounted to 86.5 million units, down 8.6% year-on-year; smartphone shipments also declined by 5.5% to 82 million units.
New product release pace has also slowed. From January to April, a total of 138 new phones were launched in the Chinese market, down 15.3% year-on-year; among them, 115 were new smartphones, down 0.9% year-on-year.
Industry insiders believe that rising memory prices and pressure on consumer spending are restraining the recovery of China's smartphone market. Some manufacturers have raised prices, while Apple has maintained stable iPhone pricing, giving it a relatively favorable position in supporting demand.
Apple has recently shown signs of recovery in the Chinese market. The company announced that sales in Greater China grew 28% year-on-year from January to March. Previous strong growth in the Chinese market has also boosted market expectations for a recovery in iPhone sales.
Industry experts believe that given the clear signs of recovery in China's smartphone market since April, the Chinese market is likely to become a key growth region again in Apple’s next earnings report.
