Trump administration halts all U.S. offshore wind projects

United States - The U.S. government announced on Monday, citing "national security" concerns, to suspend all large-scale offshore wind projects under construction in the United States. This is the latest move by the Trump administration against this renewable energy. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that, after the Department of Defense determined these projects pose a "national security risk," the operation permits for all large-scale offshore wind projects within the United States would be immediately suspended.

Burgum stated in a statement that these risks are reportedly related to "the movement of turbine blades" and their "highly reflective towers," which can "cause radar interference."

This suspension involves five large-scale offshore wind projects, all located in the Atlantic Ocean near the U.S. East Coast. According to the Department of Defense, the move aims to give relevant agencies and companies time to "assess the possibility of mitigating the related risks." Previously, the U.S. government had launched a series of attacks on renewable energy, especially wind energy.

Since returning to politics, Trump, who blames everything on wind turbines, has signed a series of executive orders aimed at weakening the industry, including freezing all operating permits and federal loans for onshore and offshore wind projects.

Trump claimed in January: "We will not go back to wind turbines again." At the same time, he has increased efforts to boost fossil fuel production.

Doug Burgum, who has close ties with the oil and gas industry, said on X Radio on Monday: "A natural gas pipeline provides as much energy as the total of these five offshore wind projects." He also called the suspension of wind projects a "reasonable" measure.
