Foreign Ministry of Russia: Lavrov Discusses Diplomatic Solutions to Iran Issue with Zarif; Foreign Ministry of Russia: EU Divisions Obvious, No Consensus on Ukraine and Energy Issues

Sputnik News, Moscow, March 28 — The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on the 27th that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed prospects for a political-diplomatic resolution to the Iran crisis with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement saying: "The two sides exchanged views on the prospects of shifting the conflict onto a political-diplomatic track based on international law and taking into account the legitimate interests of all countries in the region…"

The Russian Foreign Ministry added: "Lavrov also informed his Iranian counterpart about the delivery of a new batch of Russian humanitarian aid to the Islamic Republic of Iran."

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched multiple strikes against targets inside Iran, including attacks on Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. In response, Iran carried out retaliatory missile strikes targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military installations in the Middle East. As a result, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has sharply declined.

Vladislav Maslyonikov, Head of the Department of European Affairs at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said divisions among EU member states have become evident, as no decisions were made during the most recent summit regarding either energy issues or the Ukraine issue.

Speaking to Izvestia, he said: "The divisions are obvious. The only thing the members demonstrated at the last summit was their unwillingness to participate in any military action related to Iran. No decisions were made on either energy or Ukraine issues. Overall, this is precisely a sign of division."
