Foreign Media: Internet Penetration Rate in India Has Increased Fivefold in a Decade
According to World Bank data, India's internet penetration rate has surged from 15% in 2015 to approximately 70% by 2025, with the number of users exceeding 900 million—second only to China globally.
This explosive growth is primarily driven by the widespread adoption of affordable Android smartphones, expansion of mobile networks, and some of the lowest mobile data prices in the world, particularly evident in rural and small-town areas, effectively narrowing the urban-rural digital divide.
In contrast, developed economies such as South Korea and the United States have already surpassed 90% penetration rates, shifting their focus toward faster networks and AI infrastructure.
The massive influx of new internet users in India is reshaping markets in banking, e-commerce, entertainment, and government services. However, the key challenge lies in transforming mere connectivity into deeper digital engagement and economic output—essential for sustaining India’s position as one of the world’s largest digital economies over the coming decades.
