Foreign media: Multiple Chinese cities are now racing to build a second airport. Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu already have dual-airport systems. Hangzhou has launched site selection research this month, while Guangzhou began construction in March of a new airport featuring three runways, two terminals, with a target annual passenger capacity of 30 million, scheduled for operation by 2030. Chongqing also aims to complete preliminary feasibility studies by 2030.
Local governments view the second airport as a key infrastructure project to enhance international connectivity, increase cross-border passenger traffic, and attract emerging industries. However, analysts warn that new projects may divert demand from regional airports, exacerbating smaller airports' reliance on government subsidies, raising doubts about long-term fiscal sustainability and operational viability.
