Trump says peace in Gaza "promising" as Israel marks second anniversary of "10/7" attack

US President Trump said on Tuesday, October 7, that there is a "fair chance" of reaching an agreement to end the Gaza war. On the same day, events were held across Israel to commemorate the second anniversary of the "10/7" attack. Trump confirmed that an American delegation is currently participating in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Egypt. A Hamas negotiator stated that they hope Trump and other mediators can provide "reliable guarantees" to ensure the "complete end" of the Gaza war.

According to AFP, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement on October 07, vowing to achieve all objectives of the Gaza war, including "rescuing all hostages" and "completely destroying Hamas."

Trump said on Tuesday that the U.S. is actively pushing for peace talks and confirmed that an American delegation is currently participating in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Israeli-Hamas talks are based on a peace plan proposed by Trump on September 29. The plan includes an immediate ceasefire, exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners, phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the eventual disarmament of Hamas.

Trump said on Tuesday that there is currently "a promising opportunity to push for an agreement to end the Gaza war," adding, "We hope the hostages can be released as soon as possible."

Multiple envoys rush to Egypt to intensify efforts for a ceasefire

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati said that Trump's envoy Witkow will arrive in Egypt on Wednesday.

To advance the negotiations, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Thani and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin will also join the talks on the same day.

Halil al-Haya, the chief Hamas negotiator in Egypt, said that Hamas hopes to receive "reliable guarantees" from Trump and other mediators to ensure the "complete end" of the Gaza war. He added, "We do not trust Israel."

Hamas agrees to release hostages but rejects disarming

Hamas responded to Trump's plan by stating that it is willing to release hostages but demands that Israel completely stop its military operations and withdraw from Gaza, without mentioning the key condition of disarming Hamas.

Netanyahu expressed support for the plan but emphasized that Israeli forces will remain stationed in most parts of Gaza and insists that Hamas must be disarmed.

Israel mourns victims of "10/7" attack nationwide

In Re’im, southern Israel, people gathered at the site of the "Nova music festival" for a memorial event. On October 07, 2023, Hamas attacked the location, killing more than 370 people. In Tel Aviv, thousands gathered at "Hostage Square" (Place des Otages), calling for the release of those still held captive.

According to AFP, official data show that the attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 Israelis, mostly civilians; 251 people were taken to Gaza, with 47 still missing, and the military stated that 25 have been killed.

Israel then launched a military operation, destroying large areas of Gaza, causing a severe humanitarian crisis. According to data from the Gaza health department controlled by Hamas, the war has caused more than 67,000 deaths, mostly civilians. In the besieged Gaza Strip, hundreds of thousands of displaced people live in makeshift tents, lacking food, water, and medicine. The United Nations has declared parts of Gaza in famine and accused Israel of "genocide," which Israel denies.
