Two Russian women arrested in a U.S. military restricted area

The Russian Embassy in the United States stated that the U.S. Department of State has not yet formally informed the Russian diplomatic authorities about two Russian women who were arrested in California on January 26. It is alleged that the two women are suspected of illegally entering a military base area.

RIA Novosti quoted the embassy's statement: "As of now, no formal notification has been received from the U.S. Department of State. Our side has submitted corresponding diplomatic notes to the U.S. side."

Earlier reports indicated that the United States detained two Russian women traveling in San Diego. They accidentally entered the U.S. Pendleton Marine Base while looking for a McDonald's restaurant. The U.S. Embassy has confirmed that two Russian citizens were detained.

Russian residents living near the Pendleton Marine Base told RT Television that they suspect the two women may not have been detained merely for crossing the base area.
