The World of France: Latest PISA Results – China's Performance "Looks Very Successful"
On Tuesday, September 8th, the OECD released the results of the PISA test, which assesses the learning abilities of 15-year-old students worldwide. Numerous European countries, especially France, saw their rankings decline sharply. However, China stood out remarkably, with Chinese students ranking first globally in both science and mathematics assessments.
A total of four of China's most developed cities and provinces participated in the PISA survey: Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. The results indeed indicate that children from these regions possess very solid foundational knowledge. At the same time, however, many other parts of China—particularly those with lower development levels—were not included in the statistics.
In the PISA survey, only students from these four economically most advanced regions represented China. In science, these four regions scored 597 points, ranking first globally and far surpassing the OECD average of 482 points.
Strong Foundation in Basic Education
It cannot be denied that young people from these four regions have exceptionally solid foundational knowledge.
The World of France notes that East Asian societies, including China, have been significantly influenced by Confucian culture, placing great emphasis on education and academic achievement. Chinese students undergo extremely intensive training from primary school onward. They study not only at school but also outside of school, with many attending evening classes. Students face tremendous pressure.
Yet, the outcomes show that this model has indeed cultivated a strong foundation in basic education. China is producing an increasing number of highly educated individuals. The country is rapidly advancing in several technology fields critical to the future, including artificial intelligence and new energy.
