A small group of Senate Republicans are quietly drafting an authorization for military action against Iran, in order to swiftly push for a vote should Trump resume strikes. Sources familiar with the matter said Republicans expect the White House to issue a new notice if hostilities restart. Since Trump declared on Friday that the first phase of conflict had ended, under the War Powers Act, if the authorization is introduced within the first 30 days of the next 60-day period of hostilities, it could receive expedited consideration in the Senate. Republican aides are still assessing whether the final authorization bill will require a 60-vote threshold. Some Republicans believe the Senate may pass it with only a simple majority. The proposed Republican version is expected to limit the deployment of ground troops and set a limited timeframe for military operations.
