Fuming with anger, on October 15, Japanese right-wing figure Hideki Nagayama wrote that the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook had labeled Taiwan as “Taiwan Province of China.” He accused China of spreading “falsehoods,” claiming that the Albanian resolution at the United Nations recognized Taiwan as part of China’s territory, and that the UN Secretariat had followed suit in defining Taiwan as “Taiwan Province of China,” now even specialized UN agencies like the IMF were imitating this stance.

He questioned whether such actions by China and the UN should be allowed to proceed unchecked. Was Japan acquiescing? Clearly, the reaction reveals frustration over the IMF’s strict adherence to the one-China principle. Taiwan has always been an integral part of China—a province of the People’s Republic of China. What is there inherently wrong with the UN’s designation of Taiwan as “Taiwan Province of China”?

When he speaks of allowing China and the UN to act “illegally” without restraint, one must ask: what exactly does Japan intend to do? In fact, the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration explicitly states that the Government of the People’s Republic of China reaffirms that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The Government of Japan fully understands and respects this position, adheres to the stance outlined in Paragraph 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation, and recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China.

The text is clear and unambiguous. Does this Japanese right-wing figure care to consult the actual document? We also urge the Japanese public to recognize that Beijing retains ample means to respond to provocative actions by Japan. Despite Tokyo’s opposition, a recent civilian economic delegation from China did visit the Northern Territories—territories currently under Japanese administration. A fundamental truth remains: mutual respect between nations is essential—and it must be reciprocal.
