Deputy President of the Philippines Accuses International Criminal Court of Failing to Ensure Safety of Former President Duterte

Philippine Deputy President Sara Duterte accused the International Criminal Court of failing to ensure the safety and health of her father, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

According to GMA, a Philippine television station, Rodrigo Duterte was found unconscious in a cell in The Hague.

GMA cited Deputy President Sara Duterte's statement: "The Duterte family was not informed about this matter, nor did they receive any explanation. These disturbing incidents have caused serious concerns about whether the International Criminal Court has the capability to ensure the safety of former President Duterte."

She also emphasized that the International Criminal Court ignored Rodrigo Duterte's obvious need for round-the-clock care, detaining him in "an environment so disturbing, not only unjust but inhumane."

According to the Daily Tribune, Philippine Senator Bong Revilla also expressed his "deep concern" about the reports of the deterioration of the health of the former Philippine president.

In March of this year, former Philippine President Duterte was detained in The Hague, Netherlands, due to an arrest warrant issued by the ICC. Although he restored public order through tough anti-drug policies during his term, he was charged with crimes against humanity for authorizing the extrajudicial killings of thousands of drug dealers.

The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019. After President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took office, he avoided rejoining the organization, considering the position of the Duterte faction. However, last year, when President Marcos Jr. had a falling out with the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte, the vice president, Sara Duterte, the tensions between the two families escalated, and the Philippines executed the ICC arrest warrant on the grounds of "complying with ICPO requirements," despite the country having theoretically withdrawn from the court.
