Putin: Russia is confident in its nuclear shield
Sochi, Russian News Agency - Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at the annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club that Russia is confident in its nuclear shield.
Putin said: "In general, everything is fine. We are confident in our nuclear shield. We know what to do tomorrow and the day after. The modernization level of (strategic forces) is higher than that of any other nuclear country in the world."
Putin also said that dialogue regarding the New START Treaty is difficult.
He pointed out: "We are always told: go and persuade China to join this system of limiting offensive strategic weapons. Why us? Whoever wants China to join should go talk to China, what does it have to do with us?"
Putin also said: "We have a problem, if China needs to be involved, then why exclude the nuclear forces of the UK and France? By the way, they are NATO members. In addition, France hopes to provide a [nuclear umbrella] for the entire unified Europe."
