Romanian Residential Area Hit by Drone Strike, Merz Responds Firmly
According to Romanian official sources, early on May 29, a drone crashed into a ten-story residential building in Galati, located in the eastern part of the country near the Ukrainian border. The explosion triggered a fire on the tenth floor, injuring a woman and her child. Media reports indicate both sustained minor injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment.
Radu Alafut, Deputy Minister of the Interior, stated that approximately 70 residents were evacuated, and the blast damaged two stairwells and five vehicles. This marks the first time a drone has entered a densely populated area within Romania and caused a collision incident.
Later that day, German Chancellor Merz responded to the drone crash incident inside Romania.
In a post on social platform X, he wrote: “This once again demonstrates Russia’s intent to escalate tensions. Germany stands with its NATO allies. This incident also underscores the necessity for NATO to strengthen military presence in its Eastern flank. We are prepared to defend the territorial security of our alliance.”
