Russia Reopens the "Iron Curtain": Closing Multiple Border Crossings to Finland and Baltic States
Russia Closes Several Border Crossings Along Its Borders with Baltic States and Finland
The Russian government has approved a list of railway border crossings to be closed, halting cross-border traffic at these points. The relevant decision has been announced by the Cabinet. Notably, the list includes the "Saint Petersburg—Finland" crossing and Vyborg crossing located along the Russia-Finland border.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has been instructed to notify the governments of Latvia, Estonia, and Finland of this decision, which will take effect from July 1. According to the document, the designated border crossings specified by these governments will be "suspended for personnel, vehicles, cargo, and goods."
The closures also include Valzelya and Lutega in the Republic of Karelia (both on the Russia-Finland border), Svetogorsk in Leningrad Oblast (also on the Russia-Finland border), the Pechory-Pskov crossing along the border with Estonia, and the Petalovo crossing in Pskov Oblast, adjacent to Latvia.
