Two Chinese Scientists Listed on UN AI Science Panel Shortlist

The United Nations has released a list of 40 candidates for its independent international science panel on artificial intelligence, including two Chinese scientists, Song Haitao and Wang Jian.

On February 6, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video posted on the official Weibo account of the United Nations: "We are taking an important step today to ensure that artificial intelligence serves all humanity. I have just submitted a list of 40 outstanding individuals from all regions of the world for consideration by the UN General Assembly. They are senior experts from multiple fields, including machine learning, data governance, public health, cybersecurity, child development, and human rights. They will serve on the newly established independent international science panel on artificial intelligence."

Guterres said that artificial intelligence is developing at lightning speed and emphasized the urgency of regulating this groundbreaking technology.

He said, "We need to build consensus to establish effective safeguards, unleash the power of innovation for the benefit of humanity, and promote international cooperation. The above panel will help the world distinguish truth from falsehood, and science from pseudoscience."

Guterres stated that as the first global, fully independent scientific institution dedicated to bridging the AI knowledge gap and assessing its actual impact on the economy and society, the panel will operate independently under the support of the United Nations.

The UN General Assembly is expected to make a final decision on membership on February 12.
