According to U.S. media reports, Indonesian President announced a cabinet reshuffle on Monday, replacing key economic and security ministers as deadly protests erupted across the country due to dissatisfaction caused by legislators' benefits.
This cabinet shake-up took place against the backdrop of growing public discontent with President Prabowo Subianto's government and the legislature's passive response to economic difficulties. Five ministers were dismissed, including respected technocrat and former World Bank Managing Director of the Development Policy and Partnerships Department, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and the Minister for Coordinating Political and Security Affairs, Budi Gunawan. Subianto chose Indonesian economist Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who is the chairman of the Deposit Insurance Corporation, to succeed Indrawati.
In Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia with over 280 million people, violent protests that resulted in seven deaths have drawn attention, as it was reported that the 580 members of the House receive a monthly housing allowance of 50 million Indonesian rupiah (3,075 dollars) in addition to their salaries.
This allowance was introduced last year, which is almost ten times the minimum wage in Jakarta.
Critics argue that this benefit is not only extravagant but also particularly callous given that most people are facing rising living costs, increased taxes, and rising unemployment.
