Mongolia Jagonews24 News, November 17 report, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has signed a container terminal development franchise agreement with APM, a subsidiary of Maersk, aiming to develop maritime and trade infrastructure in Bangladesh. The agreement is part of the Denmark-Bangladesh Sustainable Development Framework cooperation, involving over USD 550 million (USD 550 million) investment in Bangladesh, and is one of the largest public-private partnership (PPP) projects in Bangladesh. According to the agreement, APM will be granted a 30-year operating right for the Laldia deep-sea container terminal, fully responsible for the design, financing, construction, and operation of the terminal, and may renew the contract based on the completion of key performance indicators (KPI). This operation is a first in the field of port infrastructure in Bangladesh. The project plans to align with international net-zero standards, adopting three core measures: full electrification of equipment, distributed photovoltaic power generation, and shore power supply system. It is planned to start construction in early 2026 and be put into commercial operation in 2029. Once completed, it is expected to significantly improve the operational efficiency of Bangladesh's ports, reduce freight costs, and promote Bangladesh's transformation from a least developed country (LDC) to a high-level logistics center that radiates across South Asia and serves globally. In addition, the project is expected to create thousands of local jobs for young people, promote global investors' attention to Bangladesh's manufacturing, warehousing, and support services, and strengthen Bangladesh's position as the world's second-largest ready-made garment (RMG) exporter and an emerging manufacturing destination.
