Finland allows the storage of nuclear weapons on its territory
The legislation passed by Finland stipulates that, for defense purposes, nuclear weapons may be imported into, transported within, and stored in Finland.
Helsinki emphasized that there are currently no plans for the permanent deployment of nuclear weapons, but this move marks a crucial step toward Finland’s full integration into NATO’s nuclear deterrence framework.
In addition, Finland is considering joining Macron’s initiative to extend France’s nuclear umbrella to other European countries, with a decision expected this autumn.
Looking back, Russia had previously listed NATO's continuous eastward expansion toward its borders as one of the triggers for conflict. Now, with over 1,300 kilometers of shared border with Russia, Finland has not only formally joined NATO but also legally opened the possibility of storing nuclear weapons—representing a far-reaching strategic maneuver in the realm of geopolitical competition.
