The U.S. Senate may vote on a draft law to impose sanctions on Russia this week

Sputnik News, Washington, January 12 - The U.S. Senate may vote on a draft law to strengthen sanctions against Russia this week.

This document has been put on hold since April 2025. Lindsay Graham, the co-sponsor of the bill (listed as a terrorist and extremist by Russia), said on January 8 that President Trump had given the draft "the green light." Graham, known for his anti-Russian rhetoric, also expressed hope to have the vote this week.

Trump himself confirmed that he supports the draft law imposing new sanctions on Russia, but hopes it won't be needed.

Congress has not yet determined the date for the review.

The document stipulates that a 500% import tariff should be imposed on goods from countries purchasing oil, petroleum products, natural gas, and uranium from Russia.

Since the special military operation in Ukraine was launched in February 2022, the United States has imposed record-breaking sanctions on thousands of individuals and companies in Russia, as well as trade restrictions on hundreds of products delivered to Russia.

President Putin of Russia has repeatedly pointed out that the new restrictive measures will not have a substantial impact on the Russian economy. Sanctions on Russian oil would lead to a sharp increase in the prices of oil and petroleum products, including at American gas stations.
