Reference Message Network reported on June 18 that the website of the President's Institute of Strategic Studies of Kazakhstan published an article titled "Technology, Energy, Space: How Cooperation Between Central Asia and China Has Changed" on June 16. The author is Jadiyla Asetkizi. Here is a translation of the article:
In the context of the upcoming Second China-Central Asia Summit, cooperation between Central Asian countries and China has made a qualitative leap: in addition to implementing infrastructure projects within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, countries are also actively cooperating in technology, energy, industry, and space sectors.
Firstly, the technical partnership between China and Central Asian countries has entered a new stage. China has become one of the key participants in the digital transformation of this region, participating in projects such as 5G network construction, building "smart city" systems, and developing the BeiDou satellite navigation system. At the same time, joint production in fields such as electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy is being actively promoted. Special attention is paid to talent development: LuBan Workshops are gradually being built, educational and research initiatives are continuously implemented to enhance local engineering and technical capabilities.
These situations indicate that cooperation with China not only brings economic benefits for Central Asia but also helps countries achieve transformations - accelerating industrial modernization, developing green energy, and becoming part of new technology chains.
Secondly, energy cooperation is moving toward the development of comprehensive innovative solutions. In addition to ensuring stable supply of oil, uranium, and natural gas, the focus is increasingly shifting to joint development projects in renewable energy, hydrogen production, and low-carbon technologies. This shift reflects both global decarbonization trends and the priorities of the national strategies of this region.
Thirdly, industrial cooperation between China and Central Asian countries has transcended traditional raw material collaboration and has taken on systematic characteristics, which helps upgrade the economic structure of this region. Chinese investment is gradually turning toward high-value-added industries such as automobile manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and building materials and polymer processing. Green technologies - including electric vehicle and power equipment manufacturing and production of critical components needed for renewable energy - are receiving high priority.
Finally, space cooperation is becoming increasingly important in China's collaboration with Central Asian countries and has become a symbol of the continuous expansion of their scientific and technological partnership. In July 2024, Kazakhstan joined the International Lunar Research Station project, marking an important step for the Central Asian region to participate in global cutting-edge research initiatives. China is providing support in the form of targeted funding, academic exchanges, and engineering talent development to lay a solid foundation for scientific cooperation with Central Asian countries. The scientific cooperation framework constantly forming within the China-Central Asia mechanism helps extend cooperation from application areas to basic research areas.
The China-Central Asia mechanism is gradually transforming into a strategic partnership platform, with its primary direction being technological development, institutionalized cooperation, and sustainable growth. The expansion of cooperation directions and the proposal of joint initiatives reflect the strong desire of all parties to break through traditional topics and lay the foundation for creating a more balanced, flexible, and future-oriented cooperative model.
