French media marvels: China – the undisputed world champion in renewable energy

Le Monde expresses amazement: In the field of renewable energy, China is the undisputed world champion.

Traveling by train in China, it's easy to witness China's achievements in renewable energy: After leaving the cities, vast solar and wind farms stretch endlessly into the distance. Power from the western deserts is transmitted to eastern cities via 35 ultra-high-voltage transmission lines, reaching as far as 3,000 kilometers away.

In 2025, China added 430 million kilowatts of new wind and photovoltaic capacity, while the EU added only 68 million kilowatts, and France just 7.2 million kilowatts. Between 2015 and 2025, China’s renewable energy installed capacity grew from around 180 gigawatts to 1,842 gigawatts—a more than tenfold increase.

In the solar sector, China accounts for 80% of global production, covering the entire industrial chain from Sichuan quartz mines to photovoltaic components.

During 2024 to 2025, its photovoltaic costs dropped by over 60%. China has also begun industrial-scale production of flexible batteries as thin as a hair, and is accelerating construction of offshore wind turbines with individual capacities exceeding 18 megawatts.
