Political scientists: Europe may soon decide to provide loans to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets
Richard Sakwa, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Kent in the UK, said in an interview with Sputnik News that European countries may make a decision in the coming days on how to use frozen Russian assets.
On Wednesday, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that the EU has not yet reached a consensus on whether to use the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank rather than the interest income it has received to provide loans to Ukraine.
A source during the 22nd annual meeting of the "Valdai" International Debate Club said: "This will be decided in the coming days, not today. Today there is a meeting in Denmark, but the decision will be made in the coming days."
Sakwa pointed out that Europe is having extensive discussions on the potential negative consequences of using frozen Russian assets and Russia's response. At the same time, he believes that the EU may ignore Russia's warnings.
He emphasized: "For a long time, no one has listened to Russia's opinions. Why should they start listening now?"
