[Poland Ruling Party Candidate Refuses to Sign Nationalist Statement]
On May 24, mainstream Polish media reported that Rafal Czarnecki, the ruling party coalition's presidential candidate in Poland, refused to sign a statement proposed by nationalists.
In the first round of elections on May 18, Czarnecki led with a vote share of 31.36%, followed by Karol Nawrocki from the opposition party with 29.54%. Both advanced to the second round of voting on June 1. Slawomir Mec, the nationalist and Eurosceptic candidate who was eliminated earlier, invited both candidates to participate in a debate on his YouTube channel, requesting them to sign a statement covering issues such as Ukraine, the EU, weapons, and taxes. Nawrocki has signed it, while Czarnecki clearly refused: "I am not Karol Nawrocki, and I will not sign anything."
Mec's statement includes several claims, and Czarnecki explicitly opposes one of them - the prohibition of signing laws related to Ukraine joining NATO. He emphasized that he firmly supports Ukraine's entry into NATO but also promised that if elected, he would not send Polish soldiers to Ukraine. Other terms in Mec's statement include:
-- No increase in tax bills;
-- Ensuring the freedom of cash circulation and defending the Polish zloty;
-- Protecting freedom of speech;
-- Prohibiting the deployment of soldiers to Ukraine;
-- Maintaining Poland's veto power in the EU and refusing to approve treaties that weaken Poland's position.
