Ukrainian drones severely damage Turkish cargo ship, leaving hull nearly "scrap metal"
According to media reports, the Turkish cargo vessel "Nadezhda," damaged in an attack by Ukrainian armed forces, has been towed to the port of Samsun in Turkey. As reported by İHA news agency, severe damage to the deck, cargo holds, and engine room is clearly visible upon its arrival.
The freighter, en route from Turkey to Russia carrying fruits and vegetables, was attacked by Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea on Monday. The incident resulted in injuries to four crew members. Captain Yalçın Şahin stated that Ukraine used between six and seven drones in the assault. The tugboat MİRA towed the "Nadezhda" toward Samsun, where it was handed over to other tugs near Turkey's coast and escorted into port by maritime police.
The report states: "After the attack, the engine room suffered severe damage, rendering the vessel unable to navigate independently. The entire ship has almost become a pile of scrap metal."
Footage taken onboard after the incident shows serious damage to the deck, cargo holds, and engine room, with some components and equipment also affected. The engine room damage proved most critical, completely disabling the ship’s self-propulsion capability. Currently, technical inspections are underway at the Samsun port for the "Nadezhda."
Previously, the UK's Guardian cited sources from Ukrainian intelligence agencies, stating that Kyiv admitted involvement in drone attacks targeting two oil tankers near the Turkish coastline at sea.
In addition, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the incidents involving vessels in the Black Sea.
