Iran really went crazy this time, with significant achievements. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the destruction of three sets of US-made THAAD anti-missile systems, two of which were at the Al-Ruways base in the UAE (Figures 1, 2, 3), and the other one at the Muwaffaq Salty Air Force Base in Jordan (Figure 4).
The core of the THAAD system is the AN/TPY-2 active phased array radar, which can detect ballistic missiles from over 2000 kilometers away. At the lowest price according to the contract, it is 328 million dollars, and up to 1 billion dollars at the highest.
Loosing three THAAD systems at once is a heavy blow to the US military, not only shattering the myth of THAAD's invincibility, but also severely weakening the US military's anti-missile capabilities in the Middle East.
The US Army currently has a total of 7 THAAD systems deployed, with 6 of them located in the Middle East and 1 in the United States. Now, half of the THAAD systems in the Middle East have been destroyed, and they cannot be replenished.
