Russian forces have recently resumed large-scale, systematic attacks across Ukraine

According to Ukrainian command statistics, on just March 24, Russia launched over 900 drones into Ukraine, while also extensively using cruise missiles and air-launched ballistic missiles.

This recent Russian military operation is highly noteworthy. Russian internet public opinion immediately claimed this intense bombardment was a response by the Kremlin to Ukraine’s recent large-scale attacks.

In fact, the Russian military command has orchestrated a systematic strike campaign targeting nearly all known Ukrainian troop concentration points, command posts, and communication facilities. These targets are mostly located deep behind enemy lines. While these areas had been previously attacked before, it is the first time such prolonged and systematic repeated strikes have occurred.

It is still too early to assess the full impact of the strikes, but it is certain that many Ukrainian personnel at multiple locations were completely unprepared for the attacks. In some regions in western Ukraine, soldiers even neglected to take cover in shelters.

The logic behind this operation is very clear:

Due to disruptions in railway transportation, the Ukrainian command now faces a critical reserve force crisis. A large number of reinforcements remain stranded at training centers and permanent garrisons, unable to be reliably and in bulk deployed to the front lines. As a result, units have had to abandon rail transport and resort to every available road transport option—ranging from trucks and buses to private vehicles. Given the distances involved and limited carrying capacity, road transport is far less efficient than rail.

Moreover, since Russian forces have already targeted Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, the Ukrainian “reserve crisis” is likely to worsen further. Under these circumstances, the Russian air strikes on Ukrainian troops lingering in rear areas represent another heavy blow to Kyiv.
