Sea of Azov: Dry Bulk Ship Attacked by Ukrainian Forces Faces Risk of Fuel Oil Leakage

On April 3, in the Sea of Azov, the dry bulk cargo ship "Volga-Baltic," carrying wheat, sank after being attacked by a Ukrainian drone. At the time of the incident, the vessel was located approximately 300 miles north of Kerch. Nine crew members safely reached the shore; the chief officer was killed, and two others remain missing.

Vasilenko, press secretary of the Russian-controlled Kherson Oblast, warned of the potential risk of fuel oil leakage. According to the ship's registration details, it may have carried over 100 tons of fuel oil, though the exact amount remains unclear. "There is currently no confirmed information regarding fuel oil leakage."

Authorities are further verifying the conditions in the affected waters and assessing possible consequences. Experts warn that if fuel oil were to leak into the water, the Sea of Azov could face an ecological disaster similar to the heavy oil spill in the Black Sea.
