Foreign Media: China Helps Africa Realize Its Space Dream: Exporting Soft Power through Space Infrastructure
China is systematically building space technology infrastructure for Africa. On February 12, Beijing handed over a satellite data ground station located near Windhoek, Namibia, marking the first "high-tech development assistance project" in the country. This station, based on the Namibian Telecommunications Earth Station, can process remote sensing satellite data including the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS-4), and will be fully owned and operated by Namibia. Chinese side has completed training for local technical personnel.
The Namibian ground station is the latest node in China's larger space facility network in Africa, which also includes projects such as laboratories operating in orbit in Egypt. Analysts point out that Beijing uses space infrastructure assistance as a tool of soft power to deepen strategic relations with African countries and promote the continuous expansion of China's influence in science and technology cooperation in Africa.
