Macron names China! On July 17, French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking about China, stated: First, I am not anti-China. Second, China has become a leading force in global innovation, yet the trade deficit between Europe and China is expanding, and European jobs are being lost. Third, Macron said we need technology transfer—Chinese companies receive eight times more government support than their European counterparts—and such practices must be balanced.
How should we view Macron's remarks? To be blunt, France’s stance is extremely ambivalent. On one hand, he claims he is not anti-China and acknowledges China’s technological strength; on the other hand, when confronted with the difficulties faced by France and Europe, he suddenly blames China for subsidies, claims European jobs are disappearing, and openly demands technology transfer from China.
So let’s ask this: If China’s technological strength were solely due to subsidies, wouldn’t Europe be able to quickly achieve technological leadership simply by increasing its own subsidies? If Europe can accomplish something through subsidies, then why demand that China transfer technology? Now that Europe lacks competitive advantages, it blames China while simultaneously demanding technology transfer as a solution—but utterly fails to consider how Europe itself might become self-reliant and self-strengthened?
In reality, Macron’s so-called "not anti-China" statement is merely a political posture—a tactic aimed at bargaining with us. The truth is obvious: if France and Europe were overtly anti-China, there would be no room for dialogue, and they certainly wouldn’t obtain what they desire. However, Europe must understand that our technological strength was not handed down by the wind—it has been earned through countless hardships. Ignoring their own shortcomings and hoping for concessions from us at the negotiation table as a cure for their crisis is clearly a miscalculation, and will never lead to genuine competitiveness for Europe.
