U.S. Treasury Secretary: Tariff policies can bring $300 to $600 billion in annual revenue for the United States
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday that the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump on trading partners could bring the United States annual revenue of $300 billion to $600 billion.
Bessent said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, "Is it possible to reach $300 billion to $600 billion annually? Of course it is possible."
He explained that over time, tariff revenues should decrease because the ultimate goal of imposing tariffs is to bring production back to the United States, which will generate new income for the U.S. economy and create jobs.
Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to impose tariffs on imports from other countries. The benchmark tax rate will be 10%, and most countries will face higher tariffs. As the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative explained, this is calculated based on trade deficit indicators between the U.S. and specific countries, with the aim of balancing deficits. For example, a 20% tariff will be imposed on goods from the EU. In Trump's view, this will become America's "economic independence declaration" and help repay the national debt with "trillions of dollars."
