Canada's federal public service layoffs continue to expand!

This week, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced the layoff of up to 280 positions, mainly concentrated in Ottawa and Gatineau. This is the latest round of layoffs by this federal department in the past six months.

A CRA spokesperson stated that the agency "must operate within its budget." "The current fiscal challenges faced by CRA are mainly due to the end of temporary project funding, government spending policies, and shifts in operational pressures."

The affected departments include: Appeals Division, Compliance Programs Division, Human Resources Department, Legal Services Department, as well as Service, Innovation and Integration Division.

In addition, the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) confirmed to CTV on Friday evening that approximately 800 contract employees will be laid off, involving Service Canada offices across the country.

It was reported that due to expectations of a decline in passport applications, the Canadian federal government is cutting jobs at the Service Canada Passport department.

An ESDC spokesperson said: "This decision was not made lightly but out of careful consideration for financial management... The department has an obligation to adjust staffing based on expected workloads to ensure balance between income and expenditure, including employee salaries."

Prime Minister Carney outlined seven key priorities in his cabinet mandate letters this week, with the seventh being: "Reducing government operational expenses so that Canadians can invest funds into businesses and individuals building the strongest global economy."

The Liberals promised during the election to "control rather than cut public service employment" and conduct a comprehensive review of government spending to improve federal efficiency.

It was reported that the size of the federal public service has decreased by 9,800 positions this year.
