EU countries are moving forward with sanctions against Iranian officials and other individuals involved in blocking the Strait of Hormuz
Brussels – The EU said on Friday that EU member states are taking steps to impose sanctions on Iranian officials and others responsible for blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has effectively closed this vital global artery for natural gas and oil transport, in retaliation for air strikes launched by the United States and Israel in February.
Previously, Brussels had focused its punitive measures on Iran's military support for Russia in the Ukraine war and its backing of armed groups across the Middle East.
Now, EU governments view this blockade as "a violation of international law," prompting a technical measure that expands the scope of existing Iranian sanctions mechanisms, enabling more individuals to be targeted.
The European Council, representing EU member states, stated: "The EU can now take further restrictive measures in response to Iran's actions undermining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
The EU did not immediately disclose the specific individuals or entities targeted by the new sanctions, which include travel bans and asset freezes.
Eurozone citizens and companies will also be prohibited from providing funds, financial assets, or other economic resources to the countries or regions on the designated list.
The ongoing conflict in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—normally carrying one-fifth of the world’s oil production—have disrupted the global economy, triggering sharp increases in energy prices.
