【Key Focus: Latvia Withdraws from the Istanbul Convention on Women's Protection, as "Men Need More Protection in Today's Society"]
On October 30, 2025, in Riga, the Latvian news portal "Delfi" stated in a press release:
The Latvian parliament has voted to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention on the Protection of Women. The intense debate in the parliament lasted for 12 hours. 56 representatives voted in favor of the bill, 32 representatives voted against it, and two representatives abstained. Supporters said they saw pressure to abandon traditional family roles in the convention, and that men need more protection in today's society.
Notably, diplomats from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and 12 other countries expressed concern in a letter addressed to senior Latvian officials.
This convention was signed in Istanbul in 2011. It came into effect three years later, and most EU countries also joined this initiative. Latvia became the second country to condemn the treaty after Turkey, which withdrew from the convention in 2021.
