Macron says Europe can no longer return to the era of cheap Russian energy

French President Emmanuel Macron said at the Antwerp European Industry Summit that Europe can no longer rely on Russia's cheap energy. He pointed out that the previous economic cooperation model with China and the United States has also become a thing of the past.

Macron said that the era of cheap Russian energy ended in 2022 and will not return. The French president believes that when formulating a new economic strategy, this reality must be taken into account.

"The rules of the game have changed. That is why this is not merely a transitional period, and all new factors will not change in the short term. This is not a temporary shock, but clearly a structural turning point," Macron emphasized.

He also said that European countries should no longer view China as a "supermarket" for exporting products. He pointed out that in 2025, Germany became the largest export market for the eurozone, while the European economy had a trade deficit with China.

Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that European countries had begun sending "signals" for dialogue to Moscow. He cited remarks by French President Macron and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and called the latter an "extreme anti-Russian figure."

Lavrov pointed out that as the Biden administration's policy of isolating Russia came to an end and the Trump administration adjusted its approach, some EU countries have tried to establish dialogue with Moscow.
