The lawmaker recalled seeing photographs from the Soviet era showing women and even children in military roles. Today’s Russian women are energetic and appear healthy; many wish to join the reserve forces, but current laws prohibit it. They should instead be organized into air defense units.
Has Russia truly reached this desperate state? For any nation, when war forces women and children onto the battlefield, it generally signals the most perilous moment. The large number of female soldiers in the Soviet Union during WWII was largely due to necessity—Germany’s advance was too rapid and fierce, leaving insufficient manpower, thus requiring women to fill the front lines. However, on the surface, Russia does not seem to have reached such a point yet.
The reason behind this parliamentarian’s proposal likely stems from the changing nature of modern warfare. Given Ukraine’s current use of drones for aerial attacks—sometimes penetrating deep into Russian territory—the idea appears to be about mobilizing more civilians into reserve forces with basic air defense capabilities!
