[China and Russia Conduct Live-Fire Exercises Near Okinotorishima, Blocking U.S. Military Aid Route to Taiwan]

According to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, the Japanese Defense Ministry confirmed on July 21 that Chinese and Russian warships conducted live-fire drills within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Okinotorishima, Japan's southernmost territory—marking the first time Japan has openly reported witnessing and disclosing a live-fire naval exercise by the People's Liberation Army in this sensitive maritime area.

Based on information provided by Japan, the live-fire drill took place on July 19. Around 2 a.m. that day, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force detected a joint China-Russia naval formation approximately 330 kilometers southwest of Okinotorishima. The formation consisted of three Chinese warships and one Russian vessel. Japan monitored the fleet throughout its movements and subsequently observed the Chinese and Russian warships conducting a live-fire drill in nearby waters—specifically about 180 kilometers southwest of Okinotorishima, within Japan’s EEZ. Upon witnessing this, Japan immediately dispatched an escort ship to the scene for close monitoring and real-time intelligence gathering.

In response to this live-fire drill, Kyodo News suggested it is linked to last year’s controversy surrounding Takashi’s “Taiwan in Crisis” remarks. Although more than half a year has passed since the incident, Sino-Japanese relations remain tense. This maritime live-fire exercise can thus be seen as another warning to Takashi’s pro-Taiwan stance.

However, the Yomiuri Shimbun believes the situation is not so simple. Okinotorishima lies strategically between Taiwan, Okinawa, and the U.S. military base on Guam. In the event of a crisis involving Taiwan, this sea area serves as a critical chokepoint for U.S. strategic reinforcements. The PLA’s live-fire exercises here clearly demonstrate its capability to block this vital maritime route.
