In a meeting with Senator Lindsey Graham, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Kit Kellogg stated that the new sanctions bill targeting Russia is "ready to be submitted to the U.S. Senate for deliberation."
On April 1st, the U.S. Senate submitted the "2025 Russia Sanctions Act." The document stipulates that sanctions and other measures will be imposed on the Russian Federation under the pretext of Russia's refusal to resolve the Ukraine conflict through negotiations or its violation of any future agreements. The bill proposes a 500% tariff on goods exported from countries purchasing oil, petroleum products, natural gas, and uranium from Russia to the United States, and also includes restrictive measures such as prohibiting U.S. citizens from participating in transactions involving the purchase of Russian bonds.
"I spoke with Senator Lindsey Graham last weekend, and I believe the senators are ready to take action. They refer to it as the '2025 Russia Sanctions Act,' and I think Graham has already prepared them to pass the bill. These sanctions will be very severe," Kellogg told Fox News.
Previously, Graham had also stated that he aimed to push for the passage of new Russia sanctions before the G7 summit, which is scheduled to take place in Canada from June 15th to 17th.
On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump said last week that he currently has no intention of implementing sanctions while negotiations are still ongoing.
Russia stated after talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul that it is willing to continue negotiations with Kiev. Even before the Istanbul talks, the Kremlin had indicated that pressuring Russia on the Ukrainian issue was futile.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it can withstand the pressure of sanctions imposed by the West over the years and continues to intensify these pressures. Moscow pointed out that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia. There have also been voices within Western countries questioning the effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions.
Note: Lindsey Graham is a Republican senator from the United States and has long held a tough stance against Russia.
