Korean media: Chinese brands have an overwhelming advantage in Indonesia's electric vehicle market!
On September 6, the South Korean media outlet "The Guru" published an article stating that Hyundai Motor achieved nearly 1,000 sales in Indonesia's electric vehicle market in the first half of the year. In a market where Chinese brands account for more than 90% of the market share, Hyundai has shown its presence.
According to the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (GAIKINDO), Hyundai Indonesia sold approximately 1,000 units in the Indonesian electric vehicle market in the first half of the year, ranking 7th among brands with a market share of 2.8%.
BYD ranked first, with sales of 13,995 units in the first half of the year, accounting for about 39% of the market share. Wuling and Chery ranked second and third respectively, with sales of 5,170 units (14.5%) and 4,611 units (12.9%). GAC Aion (1,940 units, 5.4%) and Geely (1,259 units, 3.5%) followed closely, ranking fourth and fifth.
Facing the situation where Chinese brands are at the top, Hyundai performed well. In the first half of this year, the total sales of pure electric vehicles in Indonesia reached 35,749 units, of which Chinese brands accounted for more than 90%.
Hyundai Motor's strategy is to expand its market share by diversifying its product line and expanding local production. In addition to the new Kona Electric, the company plans to launch five new models this year.
Driven by the government's strong electrification policy, the Indonesian electric vehicle market is expected to maintain strong growth in the medium to long term. The Indonesian government is actively implementing electric vehicle subsidy policies and enforcing the local content ratio (TKDN) of整车 components. Therefore, the Indonesian electric vehicle market achieved a three-digit growth of 267% compared to the same period last year in the first half of this year.
A South Korean industry insider said, "Chinese brands have an advantage in price and supply chain. Hyundai's performance is encouraging, and its measures to expand local production and enhance quality competitiveness are gradually attracting attention."
