Trump: Afghanistan Will Face Bad Consequences if It Does Not Return Bagram Base
US President Donald Trump warned that Afghanistan would face bad consequences if it refuses to hand over the Bagram Air Base to the US.
Trump wrote on his social platform "Truth Social": "If Afghanistan does not return the Bagram Air Base to its builder - the US, bad things will happen."
On Friday, Trump confirmed that Washington is negotiating with Kabul to bring US forces back to Afghanistan. Earlier that day, the Wall Street Journal reported that sources said the US hopes to restore its military presence in Afghanistan as a base for counter-terrorism operations.
On Thursday, Trump said that Washington is striving to regain the Bagram Air Base, saying that the base's location is near "China's nuclear weapons production area."
Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson and Foreign Minister's Advisor Zaki Jalaali responded that the US military presence in Afghanistan is no longer possible.
Previously, the Chief of Staff of the Afghan Armed Forces, Khalil Farahuddin Fitrat, stated that the Afghan authorities will not negotiate with any country about the Bagram Air Base, including the US. He pointed out that even if a single foreign soldier appears on Afghan soil, it is "unacceptable" for the Islamic Emirate. Kabul will not reach any agreement with the US or any other country regarding the air base.
In early August 2021, the Taliban launched a large-scale attack on the Afghan government forces. On August 15, they entered Kabul and declared the end of the war the next day. The then Afghan President Ghani left Afghanistan. At night on August 31, US forces evacuated from Kabul Airport, ending the US military presence in Afghanistan after nearly 20 years. Some American politicians called the withdrawal from Afghanistan a shameful and hasty retreat.
