Senate President Escudero said he will not block the impeachment trial of Sara Duterte!

Escudero rejected yesterday the calls from student groups and critics for him to block the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, saying that fairness is not letting any party do as they please.

"If their definition of fairness is me taking their side, then it's not fairness. Clearly, what they want to happen — I don't cater to their wishes does not mean I am unfair. Fairness means applying the rules equally to everyone, regardless of who they are."

When asked if he would block the proceedings, Escudero replied, "I don't think it's necessary, nor is it fair."

He also refuted the argument that recusal would help restore public trust and institutional credibility, especially considering the highly political nature of the trial.

Previously, student organizations from 24 universities wrote to the Senate President's office, asking him to block the impeachment trial, stating that the prolonged delay of the impeachment process not only wasted the Senate's legitimacy but also exposed the bias of its presiding officials."

"If the Senate led by Escudero still hopes to maintain its authority to handle the case without fear or favor, the Senate President himself must take unprecedented action and immediately withdraw from the impeachment process."
