The retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on U.S. products worth $27.6 billion officially took effect on Tuesday, marking another escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries. The new tariffs, ranging from 15% to 50%, cover more than 700 types of American goods including metals, clothing, home appliances, cosmetics, and agricultural products, accounting for 6% of the total value of U.S. exports to Canada last year.
Following Trump's latest round of tariff measures, the European Union and Canada are set to announce a comprehensive, large-scale partnership spanning areas from trade to security, aiming to "counterbalance global power politics dominated by China and the United States." Although Canada will not join the EU, both sides hope to cooperate as closely as possible within legal boundaries. Notably, Canada has become the first country outside the EU to join the EU’s €17.5 billion military procurement fund. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to unveil this plan during her State of the Union address in Strasbourg, France, on September 16. Mark Carney will attend the speech and deliver a separate address to European lawmakers the following day.
