U.S. Treasury Secretary Criticizes Canada's Closer Ties with China
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Canada's growing closeness with China.
Speaking at an event hosted by Breitbart News Network, Bessent responded to a journalist’s question about Ottawa’s deepening ties with Beijing, stating: "This is clearly a poor strategic move."
He noted that due to Canada’s smaller economic scale, the country receives less attention than places like Texas — a destination he is set to visit ahead of the Republican National Convention during the midterm elections.
Bessent added: "Texas has an economy worth $3 trillion, while Canada’s is $2.5 trillion."
Since 2025, U.S.-Canada relations have deteriorated sharply as Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, citing national security and drug trafficking concerns. Canada retaliated with equivalent measures.
Although both sides briefly paused reciprocal tariffs and held negotiations, the U.S. subsequently imposed new and higher tariffs, including a 50% duty on steel and aluminum products. According to later reports by Bloomberg, recent trade talks between the two nations collapsed at the last minute, reportedly due to the stance taken by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
