UK Defence Minister has threatened that if a conflict breaks out in the Taiwan Strait, "the UK and Australia are ready to fight in the Pacific region."
The report said that today, UK Defence Minister John Healey delivered a speech on the "Prince of Wales" aircraft carrier, which is moored at Darwin Harbour, along with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles. The ship is participating in joint military exercises with allies including the United States.
When asked by The Daily Telegraph how the UK would help deal with potential escalations in regions such as the Taiwan Strait, Healey responded: "If we have to go to war, as we have done in the past, Australia and the UK will stand side by side. We enhance our readiness through joint exercises, and this common deterrence effect is more significant."
This statement is one of the strongest remarks made by British officials regarding possible involvement in future wars in the region.
However, Healey stated that his comments were "general talk" and emphasized that the UK hopes to see any disputes in the Indo-Pacific region resolved through "peaceful" and "diplomatic" means.
He added: "We ensure peace through strength, and our strength comes from our allies."
