Although Greenland has slipped from the front pages of the news, Trump's obsession with the island has not diminished. For the past four months, negotiators from the United States, Greenland, and Denmark have been holding secret talks in Washington regarding Greenland's future. The goal of these negotiations is to give Trump a way out and defuse a crisis that could potentially split NATO. However, Greenland's leaders are concerned that the U.S. seeks a more prominent role on the island. The American demands include revising long-standing military agreements to allow for permanent U.S. military presence on the island and expanding the U.S. military footprint; demanding veto power over investment agreements on Greenland to exclude competitors such as Russia and China; and cooperating on the development of Greenland's natural resources. Many of these demands have met widespread opposition from Greenlanders and Danes, who view them as serious infringements on their sovereignty. They also fear that once tensions between the U.S. and Iran gradually subside, Trump may once again turn his attention back to Greenland.
