According to the latest poll by The New York Times/Siena College, a war against Iran launched by the U.S. and Israel is now dragging down Trump, distancing him further from the broader American public beyond his Republican base. 64% of voters believe Trump's decision to go to war with Iran was wrong—more than double the proportion who think it was correct. Among the crucial independent voters, this figure approaches three-quarters. Most respondents say the war is not worth the cost, and they hold very pessimistic views about the economic outlook. Fewer than one in four voters believe the cost of this war is justified. Nevertheless, Republican voters overall still support Trump’s continuation of the war against Iran. Nearly three-quarters of Republican voters express their expectation that this war will destroy Iran’s nuclear program. Preventing Iran from seeking nuclear weapons remains a key driving force behind Trump and his party, despite this goal remaining difficult and distant.
Trump’s approval rating on handling the war stands at 31%, while his overall job approval rating is 37%—a new low in his second term according to this polling series. His economic approval has been especially hit amid rising prices caused by the war, as public pessimism about the economy rebounds to levels seen during the Biden era. Among all voters, 64% disapprove of how Trump handles the economy—a domain long considered his strength. Additionally, a majority of voters hold negative views toward Trump’s approach to cost of living, immigration, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Meanwhile, this poll also reveals that although Democrats have long faced an unusually unpopular image, they now lead Republicans by about 10 percentage points in overall congressional election support (rounded to 50%:39%).
Trump’s average approval rating on RealClearPolitics has also dipped below 40% for the first time during his current term. Approval ratings have historically served as a key indicator for predicting a president’s party performance in elections. With Trump’s approval declining and public concern over the economy intensifying, the Republican Party faces an unfavorable political situation ahead of the midterm elections.
