Oman has assured the United States it will not impose tolls on the Strait of Hormuz!
Trump: Otherwise, we'll "blow them up"!
May 29 (Beijing Time), CNN report from the United States.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered remarks at a press conference held at the White House yesterday.
"This morning I spoke with the Omani ambassador, who assured me there are no plans to charge fees for passage through the strait."
"As he said, our two countries have enjoyed excellent relations for 200 years. He hopes to extend that for another 200 years—and you know, I told him that won’t work, and he doesn’t want to risk subjecting Oman or Omani financial institutions to sanctions," Bessent added.
Bessent had previously threatened Treasury action against Oman if Oman supported Iran’s efforts to impose tolls on the strait.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump warned Oman not to interfere with this critical oil transit route, saying: "Oman must act like other nations; otherwise, we’ll have to blow them up."
This is especially notable given the phrasing—almost as if offhand, seemingly tossed out casually by Trump without much prior consideration.
During his first term, Trump launched attacks in seven countries—Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
In this term, he has already threatened or reserved the possibility of strikes against another seven countries: Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Greenland, Mexico, Panama, and now Oman.
