On March 17 local time, the U.S. Central Command posted on the social media platform X that the U.S. military dropped 5,000-pound bunker-busting bombs on Iranian missile positions along the Strait of Hormuz on the same day.
The U.S. Central Command wrote, "The U.S. military used multiple 5,000-pound bunker-busting munitions to strike reinforced missile positions on the Iranian coastal area near the Strait of Hormuz." It claimed, "The Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles deployed in these positions posed a threat to international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz."
According to a report by CNN, a U.S. official revealed that the GBU-72 bunker-busting bomb was used in this operation.
This type of munition was first put into use in 2021. The U.S. Air Force once introduced that the development of the GBU-72 was aimed at "overcoming the challenges posed by deeply buried and reinforced targets."
