Korean Media: Samsung Electronics Loses Top Position in Global TV Market, TCL Tops!
On March 20, the Korean media "Korea Economic Daily" published an article stating that Chinese TV company TCL overtook Samsung Electronics in December last year, ranking first in the global TV market based on shipment volume.
The latest global TV tracking monthly report released by Counterpoint Research shows that in December last year, TCL ranked first in the industry with a 16% global TV shipment market share. Shipment volumes increased significantly in the Asia-Pacific, China, and the Middle East and Africa regions, with a year-on-year growth of 10%.
Samsung Electronics had a market share of 13%, dropping to second place. It lost the leading position it had held from January to November last year. The shipment volume in December grew by 8% year-on-year, but the market share dropped by 4 percentage points. Shipments in North America and South America saw significant year-on-year growth, but there were larger declines in Western Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. However, based on the fourth quarter as a whole, Samsung Electronics' shipment volume increased by 2% year-on-year, leading TCL.
Hisense ranked third, with its global shipment volume in December declining by 23% year-on-year. Although it maintained its leading position in the Chinese market, it failed to overcome the market downturn during this period, which saw a 18% decline in shipment volume.
Based on the entire year, Samsung Electronics occupied 15% of the total market, maintaining its first position. TCL had a market share of 13%, Hisense 12%, and LG Electronics 9%. Some analysts believe that the gap between Chinese TV companies is gradually narrowing, posing a threat to Samsung Electronics.
Counterpoint Research said, "TCL has been expanding its market share for several months, and the surge in shipments at the end of the year directly led to Samsung Electronics being surpassed in December. Although only one month's data was considered, TCL maintains a continuous year-on-year growth in shipments, while Samsung has stagnated."
Counterpoint Research further pointed out, "If TCL can gradually consolidate its position in the premium market through its partnership with Sony, it may pose a more severe competitive threat to Samsung Electronics in the future."
