Lavrov Warns: Georgia's EU Membership Could Alter Trade Ties with Russia
During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Izvestia that Georgia's accession to the European Union could pose challenges to its existing economic ties with Russia and other partner countries.
Lavrov pointed out that although Georgia's current leadership remains committed to pursuing EU membership, it also maintains a pragmatic approach, taking into account the potential consequences this step may have on the country's economy.
He emphasized that a significant portion of Georgia’s foreign trade comes from Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries. Additionally, China and several other nations play an important role in Georgia’s external economic relations.
Lavrov stated that once Georgia joins the EU, Tbilisi will be required to comply with all demands imposed by Brussels on new EU member states. He mentioned these include having to join sanctions against Russia and support the European Commission’s foreign policy positions.
The Russian foreign minister also stressed that relations between Russia and Georgia continue to develop. He cited the ongoing strong demand among Russian citizens for travel to Georgia as an example.
